By Collegeville Fire Company Volunteers
August 17, 2026

On Monday, August 17, a major gas line was struck at the intersection of West 5th Street and Park Avenue during water main maintenance work by Public Works personnel. The gas line was not properly marked, which resulted in the accidental rupture.

Emergency responders assessed the area after the incident due to the significant gas leak. For public safety, authorities evacuated nearby buildings and closed surrounding roads while the leak was managed.

Trappe Fire Company 77, Lower Providence Township Fire Department 53, and Perkiomen Township Fire Company 66 assisted with evacuations. Roadways remained closed until PECO GAS crews secured the leak, ensuring there was no further risk to the public.

The following day, PECO GAS returned to complete permanent repairs on the gas main. In some images from the scene, gas pressure can be seen forcefully blowing dirt into the air near a fenced area.
