Routine Investigation turns into Carbon Monoxide Incident

November 8, 2018

11:05 hours on Thursday Upper Providence Station 93 was on a routine investigation at the Movie Tavern
Upon entering the building to investigate a complaint, crews encountered a strong odor and retrieved their Gas/CO meter
Upon re-entering the building the CO meter immediately alarmed with 100 ppm. Engine 93 called for a dispatch for the box which brought in Stations, 34, 99, L77, Chester Ladder 65, EMS units 324, 325, Upper Providence PD. SD34, E99-1 took up positions to the front of the building and Chester Ladder 65 and E34 took positions to the rear of the building.
Crews from the addition companies entered the building and checked the many theaters for CO levels. Crews then vented the building with electric PPV
this took several hours due to the nature of the interior make of the building.
Crews were on scene for approximately 4 hours venting the building and re-checking CO levels before determining it was safe to re-occupy the building
The source of the CO was determined to be gas powered equipment being used inside the building by construction workers doing work in the building.
Market Street and Town Center Drive were shut down during the incident.
